This program alerts community members to signs that a person may be considering suicide. It acknowledges that while most people at risk of suicide signal their distress and invite help, these intervention opportunities are often overlooked. Participants learn to recognise when someone may have thoughts of suicide and to respond in ways that link them with further suicide intervention help. Suicide alert helpers contribute to a suicide safer community.

Sarah is currently looking for people to support her on her 1700km walk from Armidale to Sydney and there’s a few ways you can help.  Help raise awareness of mental health issues.

We are supporting a grassroots organisation called Walking Feat which is based in Armidale. Walking Feat brings together consumers, carers and interested community members and has an aim of raising awareness of mental illness. The name Walking Feat symbolises the Australian community walking together towards mental health, and the founder Sarah McFarlane-Eagle undertakes long distance walks to raise awareness of mental illness.

An anonymous carer tells a story of reaching the limit of their capacity to cope.

In retrospect, it was a bad day to tell the Access team I was thinking of shooting myself.  With a spate of shootings throughout Sydney in the days leading up to my crisis, I’m not sure what alternative response I could have expected.

SYDNEY Magistrate, Brian Maloney, has attracted widespread community support following a judicial commission report which deemed him permanently incapacitated due to his recent diagnosis of a bipolar II disorder.

However, particular issues apply to Magistrates and Judges due to the nature of the role they fill in our government system.  The ability to supervise judicial officers on the discharge of their duties is limited because of the need to preserve judicial independence; an issue which will not apply in most other workplaces. This article explores this issue in more depth.

The Red Chocolate Elephants is a resource for children bereaved by suicide, particularly those who have lost a parent to suicide. The text speaks directly to children, and is simply illustrated with the drawings and quotations of children who have lost a father to suicide. The accompanying DVD offers these same youngsters speaking their words aloud as we also see their drawings of their experience.

While people often know a lot about common physical health problems, there is widespread ignorance of mental health problems. This ignorance adds to stigmatising attitudes and prevents people from seeking help early and seeking the best sort of help. It also prevents people providing appropriate support to colleagues and family members, simply because they do not know how.

In order to help people provide initial support for someone with a mental health problem, a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training course has been developed.

Mental Health Carers ARAFMI NSW will be conducting this valuable course in Sydney in April 2011.

Read here for more information.

This 12-hour course is designed to give members of the public some skills to help identify and assist someone developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis situation. The course will be delivered by an accredited and experienced Mental Health First Aid instructor.
