Mental Illness can change a person. And not always for the worse. Watching my family struggle to understand me taught me how to appreciate peoples efforts to maintain my wellness. However there are obstacles. Not everyone is willing to understand and support. And never is stigma so apparent than in the field of employment. If you do not disclose your illness you may keep your job but live with feelings of guilt loneliness and isolation, and the constant fear that you may have an episode at work.
I have had a much more positive experience working with ARAFMI as a volunteer. At first I was apprehensive in disclosing my Mental Illness. But they made me feel that my experiences with Mental Health would be of value to them, and I felt accepted and appreciated. I know that if I am having a bad day all I need to do is touch base and be honest about what I am going through. Friday is my day at ARAFMI and a day I look forward to. It's a day where I get supported to support others. I hope that ARAFMI plays a large part in my future.

If you feel your mental illness is causing prejudice against you in finding a job, I would encourage you to work with a a company who can help you write a strong resume. These people are trained in all aspects of past work history and personal issues. Everyone who is willing to work deserves to have a job. I know benefits are extremely important to all of us and it can be difficult to find temporary medical insurance. Hang in there and stay positive.
