Out of the Shadows

Ann Grahame has written a short book of verses about her journey as a mental health carer

Ann Grahame is a very compassionate and passionate advocate for mental health. “We have mental illness in our family”. At times it’s difficult to talk about this illness, even to close friends”. The sufferers can exhibit behaviours that they would normally be ashamed of.

Ann has found that writing about her feelings helps her a lot. Ann asked “Whoever said, ‘The pen is mightier than the sword’? I find this to be true”. Ann has put together a booklet of verses reflective of her journey, she would like to share these verses with others to help them realise they are not alone.

With no training in the field of mental illness but much personal experience. Ann has spoken to University Students, Professionals, Probus and Rotary groups, Community Forums and many others about this condition.

Here is an example of her work:

Out of the Shadows

(Written as a tribute to those researching mental illness)

  The candle flickers

In the night

Come out of the shadows

And into the light

That fills the chinks

When the sun shines bright

Awake, awake

The dark will pass

And poets sing glad songs at last

And dance and dance

With joy again

As we unravel the secrets

Of the brain

These kind of promotional campaigns are very necessary. We know how difficult it is to cope and live with mental health problem. Taking care of these people is the most difficult thing. It is necessary to give the parents or guardians proper training to handle such persons. Persons with a limited percentage deficiency can be treated up to a level with proper care and medicine. I have heard that lifestyle lift will make you look years younger is that so? I am not saying they can live a perfect life, but still we can help.
