On line 'Mental Health Carer Survey,' now available to complete until Christmas 2011!

The online Mental Health Carer Survey 2011-12 is available now to all mental health carers to complete and convey their position. The survey will remain open until Christmas Day.  If you are a mental health carer please complete the survey or if you work with carers please pass on this link:  Mental-Health-Carers-Survey-2011-12

The 2011-12 survey is based on the 15 major issues affecting mental health carers, as identified by mental health carers throughout Australia in 2008 and 2009 and follows on from work already completed in:

(1) Adversity to Advocacy, the lives and hopes of mental health carers, 2009 and

(2) Mental Health Carers Report 2010.

As part of a cumuluative project of the Mental Health Council of Australia into the lives of mental health carers, this survey influences mental health policy and projects by providing the collective voice of carers and the person(s) they care for. The survey takes 23 minutes to complete.

To broden the survey's reach and accessibility, in 2011-2012 the survey will

1.      A separate Young Mental Health Carers survey based on Facebook – details soon.

2.       A survey in 4 languages other than English (released early in the New Year)

3.       Workshops with regional and remote Aboriginal communities

For those wanting a paper survey please contact Carolyn.Conaghan@MHCA.org.au who will be happy to email a printable version.

Thank you,

Excellent post. I was checking continuously this
blog and I'm impressed! Extremely helpful info specially the last part :) I care for such information a lot. I was looking for this particular info for a long time. Thank you and best of luck.

Awesome to provide a study, and its not a bad one but where are the concerns that report to their not being a psychological problem,or that report to the non certified, or do we think everybody marked with unpleasant brands has a psychological sickness fait accompli style,we have a nice collection of Christmas Messages

To Whom It May Concern:

I am a carer for two children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). I received this survey in my inbox today from the local autism organisation, along with a note saying that because it includes people with "Aspergers and Autism", we were all encouraged to fill it out. However, I am wondering if this is really the case because the questions are explicitly geared toward people with mental illness. As I'm sure you're aware, ASDs are neurological disorders and it would not only be erroneous to suggest these people are 'ill', but highly offensive.

So, I suppose my questions are:

1) Are carers of children/adults with autism included in this survey where ASD is the primary diagnosis, or only as a secondary diagnosis?

2) If it's the former, how do I answer the first question about the number of people with a 'mental illness' that I care for? Can I skip that one? What about the one that talks about 'recovery-based care options' (which do not exist for people with ASDs)?

Thanks for your time.

John,

thanks for your input. The survey has been constructed by the Mental Health Council of Australia and we have posted it on here to support their ongoing research into carer issues.

The questions you raise are most valid and we appreciate your input. We will forward your comments to the Mental Health Ciouncil of Australia for their information.

Kind Regards

Nice to offer a survey, and its not a bad one but where are the questions that relate to their not being a mental disorder,or that relate to the non compliant, or do we think everybody tagged with nasty names has a mental illness fait accompli style, or something, i didn't see the option of no they have never had a mental illness, anyway the questions are fair enough, but i would have liked some of these questions that relate to the non compliant asked, i mean seeing as over half the people being treated by mental health are not compliant.Id be asking the other half of the patients/victims carers questions that relate to their reality, questions that would relate to them seeing they're at least half of the equation. Try these questions,

1/ are you a carer of someone diagnosed with a mental illness- y n

2/ Is that someone you care for diagnosed correctly in your view with a mental illness- y n

3/ are you compliant with their treatment- y n

4/ are they compliant with the treatment- y n

5/ Do you think they have a mental illness- y n

6/ Are they being forced to take medication from mental health for a diagnosed mental illness, - y n

7/ Do you think their medication is helping them - y n

8/ Do you think their medication is hurting them y n

9/ Do you want them to get off the medication/ with mental healths help y n

10/ Do they want to get off the medication/ with mental healths help y n

11/ Do you want them to stay on the medication/but reduce with mental healths help-- y n

12/ do they want to stay on the medication/ and continue to get help from MH- y n

13/ if mental health doesn't help them to get off the drugs, do you think you could trust them - y n

14/if mental health does help them to get off the drugs, do you think you could trust them - y n

15/ Do you believe the person you care for has emotional psychological behavioral problems more than mental illness problems. Y_N
